What’s inside
For a while, or until you say so
15 or 30 minutes, 1, 2 or 5 hours, or until you turn it off.
While an app runs
Stay awake while a render, a build, a download or a call app is open, then sleep as usual.
While plugged in or on an external display
Rules for power and displays, and while downloads are in progress.
With the lid closed
Closing the lid doesn't put your Mac to sleep while keep awake is on. macOS asks for an administrator's password once.
Battery aware
Keep awake can switch itself off when the battery runs low, and keep the display on only if you want it.
Bluetooth on sleep
Turn Bluetooth off while your Mac sleeps and back on when it wakes.
How to stop a Mac from sleeping
- 1
Click Overswan in your menu bar, next to the clock, or press ⌃⌥Space.
- 2
Turn on Keep awake and pick how long.
- 3
To keep it awake on its own, add rules in Settings › Keep awake: apps, power, displays or downloads.
Questions
- Can a MacBook stay awake with the lid closed?
- Yes. Turn on “Stay awake with the lid closed” in Keep awake settings. macOS asks for an administrator's password once. Use it on a desk: a closed Mac in a bag can get hot.
- Is there a Terminal command for this?
- macOS has caffeinate: run caffeinate -d in Terminal and the Mac stays awake until you close the window. Overswan does the same from the menu bar, with durations and rules.
- Will it drain my battery?
- Staying awake uses more power, so keep awake can turn itself off when the battery runs low.
- Can it keep my Mac awake while a long job runs?
- Yes. Add the app as a rule, and your Mac stays awake while it's open, then sleeps again.
