How to snap windows on a Mac
- 1
Install Overswan and allow Accessibility when it asks. macOS needs it before any app can move other apps' windows.
- 2
Click the window you want to move.
- 3
Press ⌃⌥← for the left half or ⌃⌥→ for the right half. Use ⌃⌥U, I, J and K for quarters, and ⌃⌥D, F and G for thirds.
Questions
- Does macOS have window snapping built in?
- macOS Tahoe can tile a window when you drag it to the edge of the screen. Overswan adds thirds and two thirds, a shortcut for every layout, moving windows between displays and a switcher with previews. If you use Snap by dragging, turn off the system's edge tiling in Desktop & Dock so the two don't compete.
- Can I change the shortcuts?
- Yes. Every layout has its own shortcut in Overswan's Settings, and you can clear the ones you don't use.
- Does it work with more than one display?
- Yes. ⌃⌥⌘→ and ⌃⌥⌘← move the front window to the next or previous display.
- Why does it need Accessibility permission?
- macOS only lets an app move and resize other apps' windows with Accessibility permission. Overswan asks for it the first time you use a window tool.
